D23 2019 Day 2 Recap

Yesterday at D23 Expo, while we were unable to attend, we did follow the long list of news and announcements from the day’s panels.

The star panel of the day was ‘Go Behind the Scenes with The Walt Disney Studios,’ where we got a look at the upcoming films from Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars. There was A LOT of news and information shared, so here are some of the highlights:

The Rise of Skywalker

For this third installment of the new trilogy, we got a new poster, featuring Rey and Kylo battling in front of an eerie face – the face of Emperor Palpatine. One might recall that in the first teaser trailer for this film, we heard the emperor’s haunting cackle at the end. This presentation also provided a new clip with Rey, seen wielding a red duo-lightsaber and wearing black – is she going to the dark side? The cast, minus Adam Driver, were there and brought copies of the new poster for everyone in the crowd.

This is an upcoming Pixar film, featuring the voices of Tom Holland and Christ Pratt in the lead roles. We got a few clips showing the story of Elf brothers who receive a special gift from their late father. This new footage from the film revealed this story’s focus on a world where magic once thrived and these brothers’ quest to bring that magic back into the fold. A new poster was also revealed and gifted to the audience. This presentation meant the first public appearance of Tom Holland since news of Sony/Disney deal trouble, putting his future in the MCU as Spiderman in doubt (Tom will still play the character, they just may to have to write story lines without MCU connections going forward). Tom was touched by the cheers in the crowd, telling everyone, “I love you 3000,” quoting the iconic line from Avengers: End Game. He went on to acknowledge the tough and dramatic situation but stayed hopeful for the future of Spider-Man.

Another new Pixar film, this one is set for release in June 2020. Starring Jamie Foxx and Tina Fey, as well as Daveed Diggs of Hamilton fame, this film will tell the story of You Seminar, where souls learn their passions before graduating and entering a newborn child.

Frozen 2

Another highly anticipated sequel, the cast was present, as well as some new faces. Anna, Elsa, Olaf, and Kristoff – Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Josh Gad and Jonathan Groff respectively – will be joined by a flash-back of Anna and Elsa’s mother, Queen Iduna played by Rachel Evan Wood and a new character, Lieutenant Matthias, played by Sterling K. Brown. The clips shown revealed one of the new songs, potentially called ‘Into the Unknown,’ sung by Idina Menzel, who made ‘Let It Go’ such a hit from the first film. The show closed with a live performance of a new song, “Some Things Never Change,” and a new poster was revealed and gifted to the audience.

This is one of the next movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The big news out of this presentation was that Kit Harrington was confirmed to be a part of this already large, star studded cast. Almost the entire cast was there, and we got to see their superhero looks. The film will also feature Richard Madden (a reuniting of the ‘brothers’ from Game of Thrones along with Kit Harrington), Kumail Nanjiani, Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Lauren Ridloff, Brian Tyree Henry, Lia McHugh, Don Lee and Gemma Chan.

Black Widow

For this anticipated MCU film featuring a beloved member of the Avengers, the crowd got a special behind the scenes video from Scarlett Johansson, David Harbour, and Florence Pugh that included recorded video from set, followed by a clip, although sources say this is the same clip as what was shown at the year’s Comic Con. The scene featured a fight between Natasha (Scarlett Johansson) and Elena (Florence Pugh), and also revealed Black Widow’s new white suit.

Black Panther 2

A release date of May 6, 2022 was announced for this highly anticipated sequel. At this point no title has been announced, but we know that the same director, Ryan Coogler, will be back for this anticipated continuation of the successful Black Panther series. (WAKANDA FOREVER!)

Jungle Cruise

Dwyane Johnson and Emily Stone arrived to share news of this film, slated for release in July 2020. Dwayne sailed through the crowd on a boat, while Emily drove up in a car with themed license plate. They presented two trailers: one from each of their character’s point of view. There were also many references to the classic Disneyland ride, including back side of water jokes.

The presentation revealed five minutes of footage, including getting to see the new Phoenix that will replace Mushu from the animated film, and a training montage that, while not a musical number, did feature the ever so popular “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” playing in the background.

This presentation revealed a new look at the iconic villain. A new photo of Emma Stone, in title role, was revealed and she was looking fierce (and oddly like Helena Bonham Carter…).

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil

Angelina Jolie and other cast members made an appearance to share more about this sequel, in theaters on October 18, 2019.

Raya and the Last Dragon

This was revealed to be the next Disney animated feature. Raya and the Last Dragon will star Awkwafina (Nora Lum) as Susi the Dragon and Cassie Steele as Raya. The story is inspired by South East Asia and, based on the art, looks lovely.

So much was revealed and this was only the second day of the expo! While we missed out on seeing these announcements live, we had a wonderful day at the parks and followed along with the breaking news on Twitter. Today marks the final day 3 of D23 Expo 2019! We will be attending this final day and sharing the latest news from the highly anticipated, “Sneak Peak! Disney Parks, Experiences and Products” presentation. This panel is rumored to bring a slew of news about changes coming to the parks, especially anticipated changes to Walt Disney World. We will share everything we can about what we learn and see over on our Twitter, Instagram and later here. Follow along!

As we mentioned, since we were not at D23 yesterday, we spent the day in Disneyland and were able to see the Main Street Electrical Parade during this limited return. In exchange for photos from the Expo, here are some photos of our day in the park!

D23 2019 Day 1 Recap

We have survived the first day of D23 Expo and we wanted to share some of our favorite moments, some thoughts and our hopes for the rest of the weekend.

The highlight of today, for us, was attending the Disney + panel where LOTS of content was previewed and hyped. We were introduced to the cast of High School Musical the Musical the Series. These actors have big shoes to fill, as High School Musical was a cultural phenomenon when it was released and we think they may do just that. They are talented and the trailer for the show was much better than anything we had envisioned. With such a confusing title, and little information going into this presentation, one might have thought this was a TV show remake of the original, but that is not the case. We were intrigued to see it is a new story of its own about a high school drama department, putting on their own production of High School Musical. Thanks to the trailer shared today, we got to see how this series will honor its roots, while sharing a new story of its own.`

We got a blast from the past in the form of Lizzie McGuire herself, Hillary Duff, who will be reprising her role, as we get to see what 30-year-old Lizzie is up to in a new show.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is making its way to Disney+ with LOTS of new content, but also LOTS of familiar faces. As had been previously announced, we will see Loki again, played by Tom Hiddleston, now in his own show, as well as a Hawkeye show with Jeremy Renner.

But we also learned about What If…, a new animated show based on the popular comics that ask what would happen in key comic book moments if one thing changed. All current MCU characters in this show will be voiced by the actors we know and love.

Among other things, this will also introduce Captain Carter, voiced by the Peggy Carter we know – Hayley Atwell – which on its own is awesome!

We will also get to meet Ms. Marvel, She Hulk and the Moon Knight in new productions with more details to come in the future.

We will get to spend more time with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Wanda(&)Vision. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will not just give more time to the two name characters, but will also bring back Sharon Carter, played by Emily VanCamp. The later of these, WandaVision, was described as a wacky, action/sit-com… how they plan to pull that off remains to be seen. The trailer did not shine light on what this means, blending clips from their prior Avenger moments with clips from the Dick Van Dyke Show. So, who knows…

We got to see new non-fictional pieces, such as Be Our Chef, a family cooking competition where the winner’s dish will be served at Disney World.

Also, The World According to Jeff Goldblum, looks amazing and true to who Jeff Goldblum is. This will be a whimsical journey through the world of jeans, shoes, tattoos and more! Encore, with Kristen Bell, looks very sweet, reuniting old High School theater students to put on an ‘encore’ preform together after having left high school many years before.

Pixar is also bringing new content to the streaming platform, including Monsters at Work with Ben Feldman and Aisha Tyler, and Forky Asks a Question, which both look promising.

The live-action Lady and the Tramp trailer was released and, as we expected, it looks stunning.

The dog leads, Rose (Lady) and Monte (Tramp), paid the crowd a visit and were just as adorable in person.

In time for Christmas, there will be a new film released called Noelle, staring Anna Kendrick, Bill Hader and Billy Eichner. It has a cute story of the son of Santa running away from taking over the family business and his sister, Noelle coming out to the ‘real world’ to find him.

The world of Star Wars will be expanding even more with several new shows, including new episodes of The Clone Wars, and an as yet unnamed series with Cassian Andor (and K-2SO) whose characters are being reprised by Diego Luna and Alan Tudyk.

Then we got the (very well received by the crowd) announcement of a new show featuring the return of Ewan McGregor as Obi Wan Kenobi!

Day 1 of Disney + will also include the new series The Mandalorian, telling the story of what happened in the aftermath of The Return of the Jedi and the end of the Empire.

This entire presentation did its job of introducing the new streaming service and inspiring us all to sign up.

We also got to see the Expo Floor a little bit, which has lots of exhibits we hope to finish exploring when we return on Sunday.

Getting into any of the Disney shops is VERY difficult without a reservation, but we did make into the Disney Store and hopefully we will get into one more of the other two on Sunday as well.

So far we are enjoying ourselves here, even with a few hiccups in line management (ah our good old friend LineCon) and can’t wait to return on Sunday.

Tomorrow, since all Saturday passes were gone before we got ours, we will be back in Disneyland and watching the news with everyone online. And then, Sunday, we will get to have our last taste of this D23 Expo.

See you tomorrow!
